According to Lee et al. a micropenis is “an abnormally small penis with a normal configuration.” In other words, a micropenis has a normal anatomical configuration, but is significantly smaller than the average adult penis size (about 7cm (3 inches) flaccid and 12.5cm (5 inches) erect). The term microphallus is used to describe a penis that is both small in size and abnormal in the positioning of its urethral opening (a condition known as hypospadia).

“Most cases of micropenis are due to a fetal testosterone deficiency. Micropenis may also be caused by an isolated growth hormone deficiency. It can occur as a primary idiopathic structural anomaly or may be associated with a genetic syndrome. The most common cause of micropenis is an abnormal hypothalamic or pituitary function that leads to hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. The second most common cause is a primary testicular disorder that leads to hypergonadotropic hypogonadism.” (Medscape)

Micropenis Causes

  • Genetic syndromes

  • Partial androgen insensitivity syndrome

  • Deficiency of 5-alpha reductase

  • Conditions associated with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism

  • Conditions associated with decreased testosterone production and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism

Micropenis Treatment

If micropenis is present during infancy and is diagnosed as being caused by a hormone deficiency, hormonal replacement therapy is administered to facilitate genital growth.

Testosterone Therapy in Infants and Children

In cases where the condition is caused by a testosterone deficiency, testosterone therapy is generally highly effective in treating micropenis. Appropriate hormonal replacements in infants with other hormonal deficiencies (growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency).

Last Micropenis Solution: Penile Enlargement Surgery

In cases when a patient is unresponsive to hormonal therapy for micropenis treatment, surgery remains a last resort treatment for adults and adolescents.

Penile enhancement surgery uses a subcutaneous soft silicone implant in order to effectively enhance the length and girth of the penis.
